ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF MICROCEMENT

The #microcement is a high quality cementitious decorative coating composed of polymers, resins, aggregates and pigments. Due to its versatility, it is used in private homes and commercial premises as well as in large surfaces (hotels, restaurants, ...).

It is a very functional coating, which, thanks to its to its high adhesion, can be applied on different substrates without removing the existing coating - a very interesting solution for renovations - using thicknesses of less than 3 millimeters.

ADVANTAGES. In addition to its aesthetic quality, with a wide variety of colors and finishes (matte, satin, gloss), microcement stands out for its functionality as it is a pavement resistant to traffic, scratches, impacts and some chemical products. It is a continuous coating without joints, making it easy to clean and disinfect. It is easy to maintain and should be cleaned with soap and water (pH neutral). It is also a fireproof material, which makes it particularly suitable for public spaces, commercial premises...

DISADVANTAGES

- Price.

- Application and drying time (between 4 days and one week).

- It must be executed in complete layers to ensure homogeneity (tone).

- The need to apply a sealant to protect it from dirt and make it impermeable, since it is a porous material.

- The possibility of cracks appearing due to support movements.

I attach some images of the last microcement pavement that we have done in a restaurant in Lleida.

We will end with a brief description of the procedure to be followed when it comes to installing a microcement pavement:

    • Support preparation
    • Application of the primer coat over the existing surface to improve adhesion.
    • Application of the base coat to equalize the surface and placement of the fiberglass reinforcing mesh.
    • Application of the second base coat to achieve a suitable support for the microcement.
    • Application of two coats of microcement (pigmented).
    • Application of the waterproofing sealant.

Emphasize that the different finishes of microcement will depend on the textures and sealants used, as they are what condition the appearance and final finish.
